Riot Games is discontinuing further development of its fighting game 2XKO, less than a year after its full release. The developers announced that active development will end in December 2026. The game will remain available to players, but it will no longer receive additional seasons or major content updates. Riot also decided to issue partial refunds for some purchases and to make all heroes available at no extra charge.

Riot Games ends active development on 2XKO

The decision by Riot Games is primarily related to player retention results. The company admitted that retention metrics did not reach a level that would allow continued, stable funding of the game's development. Despite positive reception to new champions like Akali, Senna, and Thresh, interest in the title did not grow at the expected pace. Active development on 2XKO is scheduled to end in December 2026. Until then the developers plan to release the last two champions, Lux in September and Samira in October. After that the game will enter maintenance mode, and further seasons, Battle Passes, and major content updates will no longer be produced.

Riot emphasizes that the decision was not made suddenly. The team reportedly considered, among other things, reducing staff, changing the update cadence, and overhauling the business model. Ultimately, however, they decided the best course was to finish the planned content and gradually wind down active development.

Players will receive refunds, and all heroes will be unlocked

Riot Games has also prepared changes to make it easier for players who stick with 2XKO to keep playing. The company announced refunds for KO Points and Starter Edition purchases made before August 20, 2026. At the same time, all heroes will be unlocked for free, so players won't have to buy characters to use the full roster. After active development ends, the game will still be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. However, Ranked Mode, Battle Passes, and seasonal content will be removed. Riot plans to limit itself to maintaining the game and fixing any issues.

The end of development for 2XKO fits a broader trend of Riot scaling back projects that aren't directly tied to its biggest brands. In recent years the company has scaled back development on Legends of Runeterra, shut down Riot Forge, and canceled several other projects. Riot says, however, it does not intend to stop experimenting entirely and plans to try its hand at new genres again in the future.

2XKO will enter maintenance mode after active development ends in December 2026. Riot Games will refund selected purchases and make the full roster of champions available to all players. Servers will remain online, but the game will no longer receive new seasons or major updates. The decision shows how difficult it is for Riot Games to sustain new live-service games outside its biggest franchises.
