Metro 2039 has been officially shown and it looks like the creators from 4A Games are returning to what fans loved the most: the claustrophobic tunnels of the Moscow metro and the heavy post-apocalyptic atmosphere.
Return to Moscow and a new hero
After a more open world in Metro Exodus, the new installment returns to the underground. This time we will take on the role of The Stranger, the first fully voiced hero in the series. The story is said to be even darker and more personal, and the game's world depicts a metro governed by a brutal regime. The creators clearly emphasize that they do not want to create "attractions" from the post-apocalypse; instead, they focus on the consequences of human decisions and the heavy atmosphere.
Gameplay remains tactical and demanding
The first fragments of gameplay show well-known elements of the series: handmade weapons, limited resources, and tension in every fight. Weapons can jam, ammunition is valuable, and decisions in battle matter. Familiar monsters, such as Nosalise, also appear, and encounters with them require cunning, not just reflexes. This is not a typical shooter; it's more about survival than fast action.
The World Full of Stories and Emotions
One of the most interesting elements is the so-called "environmental storytelling." Every place is meant to tell its own story through details of objects, the layout of rooms, or traces left by people. Importantly, the game is also strongly inspired by real events and the experiences of its creators, particularly related to the war in Ukraine. This adds even greater authenticity and emotional weight to the narrative.
Metro 2039 looks like a return to the atmospheric roots of the series with an even greater emphasis on story, realism, and emotions.
