OpenAI is introducing a change that will significantly improve the comfort of using ChatGPT. The latest update makes ChatGPT Voice no longer a separate mode, and voice conversations can now be conducted directly in the regular chat window.
What it means for users
Until now, voice calls required switching to a separate screen with an animated, blue sphere. There, you could talk to ChatGPT, listen to responses, and use a few additional options like live video recording or quick mute. The problem was that:
– on that screen, you couldn't see the text transcription of the responses,
– if something was missed, you had to exit voice mode,
– switching between voice and text was not smooth.
After the update, everything happens in one window. You can speak and simultaneously see the responses appearing on the screen in real-time, as well as review the previous conversation and view shared visualizations – from maps to photos.
More Natural Conversation
In practice, this means a more intuitive use of ChatGPT. Voice and text cease to be separate worlds – now you can smoothly switch between them within a single conversation. When you want to end the voice chat and return to typing, just tap "end."
If someone prefers the previous, "separate" voice mode, they can still return to it. Just go to Settings → Voice Mode and enable Separate mode.
The new interface is already being rolled out for all users, both in mobile applications and in the web version. The change will appear automatically.
