Apple has officially released the iOS 26.5 update along with new versions of the systems for iPads, Apple Watches, Macs, and Apple TV. The update is nearly 12 GB in size and focuses mainly on bug fixes and security, although a few new features have also been introduced.
iOS 26.5 adds RCS encryption and new Maps features
The most important new feature is the introduction of end-to-end encryption for RCS messages between iPhones and Android devices. The feature is expected to roll out gradually with supported carriers and will enhance the security of modern messaging, including high-quality photos, typing indicators, and advanced group chats. Apple also added a new "Suggested Places" section in the Maps app. The system will recommend places based on the user's location, popular spots in the area, and previous searches. According to earlier information, the update is also laying the groundwork for ads in Apple Maps, which are expected to roll out this summer.
A massive update focuses mainly on security fixes
Although there aren't many new features, Apple emphasizes the huge number of security fixes. iOS 26.5 addresses over 50 different vulnerabilities and system bugs. The company also released new Pride Luminance wallpapers with dynamic color effects. Other Apple devices also received updates, including iPadOS, watchOS, macOS Tahoe, and visionOS. For macOS Tahoe, there are new subscription options in the App Store and identical changes in Apple Maps as on iPhones.
iOS 26.5 does not bring a revolution, but it introduces important security fixes and a few new features related to RCS and Apple Maps. The update is very large; however, Apple is strongly focusing this time on the stability and security of the system.
