Wizards of the Coast has cancelled a new game set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, which was being developed by the Giant Skull studio founded by the former director of the God of War and Star Wars Jedi series. The project was scrapped just a few months after its official announcement.
Ambitious action game has not survived even a year
The new production was intended to be a single-player action and adventure game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. The project was overseen by the studio Giant Skull, created by Stig Asmussen, who previously worked on God of War III and the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order series. According to Bloomberg, Wizards of the Coast cancelled the project during an internal review of future games. However, the company emphasises that it still maintains good relations with the Giant Skull studio.
This is not the first issue related to the Dungeons & Dragons brand in recent months. Recently, a cooperative project codenamed Project Baxter being developed by Starbreeze Studios was also cancelled. Currently, the only officially confirmed major D&D game remains the Warlock project being developed by the Invoke studio. At the same time, the head of Hasbro recently suggested that other unannounced productions are also in development within this universe.
Hasbro still wants to invest billions in AAA games
Despite further cancelled projects, Hasbro does not intend to abandon the gaming market. The company plans to invest as much as a billion dollars in the development of large AAA productions based on brands such as Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering. Interestingly, the corporation is currently focusing mainly on classic single-player games instead of the live service model.
