The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt remaster debuts today, 29 September. The new version of CD Projekt RED's cult classic is available as a free update for those who own the game on a supported platform. The remaster is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
The Witcher 3 has received plenty of changes
The biggest changes are to the visuals. On PC, path tracing has been added, along with support for NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 4 and Intel XeSS 2.0. Textures and models have also been updated using the The Witcher 3 HD Reworked project, lighting has been improved and vegetation given a visual upgrade. However, CD Projekt RED didn’t stop at graphics. The skill system has been rebuilt, combat and Geralt’s movement have been improved, and new options have been added to photo mode. The remaster will also receive cross-platform mod support.
New PC requirements
Along with the Remaster, the game's hardware requirements have also changed. CD Projekt RED emphasises that the new version needs a more powerful PC than the original The Witcher 3, particularly if we want to use path tracing. Fans who want to play it at 4K and 60 frames per second will need suitably powerful hardware. The devs recommend an RTX 5080 for that configuration. The developer also advises installing the latest graphics drivers before launching the game. On PC there are technologies available that can help achieve smoother performance. DLSS 4.5 has gained support for Ray Reconstruction, FSR 4 offers frame generation and Anti-Lag 2, and XeSS 2.0 also supports frame generation and a low-latency mode.
PS5 Pro has also received upgrades
Owners of the PS5 Pro can take advantage of PSSR, VRR and an uncapped frame rate. Performance mode allows up to 90 frames per second on screens supporting VRR.
Importantly, the update does not require repurchasing the game. If you previously bought The Witcher 3, you will receive the Remaster at no extra cost on the same platform.
