Sony introduces AI-based image upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5. The new solution is called Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR. The first games to receive support for it are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
QSSR is intended to improve image quality on the standard PS5
QSSR was developed as part of Project Amethyst, Sony's collaboration with AMD on graphics technologies. The solution uses a simplified neural network architecture and has been optimised to run on the less powerful PS5. Sony says it will primarily improve image detail and stability. This matters especially in games rendered internally at a lower resolution, where the image is then reconstructed to a higher resolution before the signal is sent to the television. However, it is not exactly the same technology as PSSR. PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution remains a more advanced solution designed for the PS5 Pro, while QSSR is its lighter variant prepared with the standard PS5 in mind.
Only two games to start with
The first updates to include QSSR were released for Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. In both cases the new upscaling method appears as an additional graphics option. However, it is important to note that QSSR will not work automatically in all games. Each title must be properly updated or prepared from the outset to support the new library. This also means that games that already have PSSR on the PS5 Pro do not automatically receive QSSR on the standard PS5. Sony says it will make the technology more widely available to PlayStation developers. Only future games will therefore show how significant the difference in image quality will be compared with the current upscaling methods on the PS5.
