Nintendo has done something that no one has achieved before. The Switch 2 hit the market on 5 June and in just four days sold over 3.5 million units. Globally. These are official figures from Nintendo, not leaks or speculation.
In comparison – Sony needed 16 days to distribute 2.1 million units of the PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 5? Seven weeks and only 4.4 million. Source? Daniel Ahmad from Niko Partners, a guy who doesn't throw around numbers lightly.
The strongest launch in console history
This means one thing: ChooseTV 2 is the fastest-selling console in history. Even if the hype dies down (and it probably will a bit), Nintendo can already start popping the champagne. But of course, the question arises – what next?
ChooseTV 2 is launching from a completely different place than its predecessor, the Wii U, which was practically dead just a few months after its release in 2012. This time, it’s different. ChooseTV 1 sold over 152 million units – and that was during a time when the market was tougher than ever.
Does the high price of Nintendo not hinder it in this?
There are however some catches. The new console is more expensive, and the games too. Some players are turning up their noses. Additionally, the list of titles available at launch is not overwhelming. There are a few new releases, some remasters, but no major hits at the start.
And this is where the power comes in. The Switch 2 is already powerful enough to handle games from PS5 and Xbox Series X. What's more – the first ports are already appearing. For many, this is a sufficient reason to invest in the hardware. Even if it will take a little while to wait for "Zelda" or the new "Mario".
Wii U was a flop. Now it's a totally different league!
Nintendo stumbled once – Wii U was a failure. But they learned everything they needed from that lesson. Today they have in their hands a product that not only looks good in charts but also genuinely changes how and where we play. Because we cannot forget that it is a universal console. Switch 2 is still a hybrid console – you can play on the go, you can connect it to the TV via HDMI, you can take it on a trip or hand it to the children to have a moment of quiet. It’s not just a console. For many, it’s even a lifestyle now.
Will Switch 2 keep up the pace? No one knows. But one thing is for sure – it launched like a rocket.
