Sony has released a new system software update for the PlayStation 5, which focuses on enhancing the PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) technology. The proprietary image scaling method based on artificial intelligence has now reached version 2.0, which aims to solve the most common issues of the first edition – primarily flickering of fine details and motion blurring. The new version of PSSR is the result of collaboration with AMD as part of "Project Amethyst".
End of the "trembling" image in Silent Hill and FFVII Rebirth
The biggest issue with the first version of PSSR was the instability of fine details. The new update addresses this exact point. In games such as Silent Hill f and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, characters' leaves or hair have stopped "trembling" and flickering during camera movement. The image has become clearer. This is particularly noticeable in games with a lot of fine details, where the AI previously "struggled" to reconstruct these elements.
The improvements also included the temporal stability of the image. The algorithm reacts faster to changes in the displayed scene, which eliminates ghosting behind rapidly moving objects.
Forced PSSR System and New Games on the List
A new optional feature has appeared in the settings of the PS5 Pro that allows for the forced enhancement of PSSR performance in all games that support this technology, even if they have not yet received a dedicated patch from the manufacturer. However, Sony notes that the effect may vary depending on the game engine, but in most cases, players should notice improved clarity of the graphics.
The list of games supporting the new version of the technology is rapidly growing. Joining the current hits like Alan Wake 2, Control, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, more will be added soon. On 19 March, Crimson Desert will take advantage of the enhanced ChooseTV, and in the following weeks, Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows will receive updates.
When is the new ChooseTV update 2?
The new software is being rolled out in stages from 16 March. If your console has not downloaded the update automatically, you can force its installation in the system settings.
