Buying an Nvidia Shield TV is becoming increasingly difficult. The Shield TV Pro is listed by the manufacturer as unavailable, and the standard model has vanished from Nvidia's US website. The company insists, however, that this does not mean the end of the entire product line.
Nvidia Shield sold out. Company cites strong demand
According to FlatpanelsHD, availability issues affect many markets. Nvidia explains the situation by saying that devices are sold out due to demand. The manufacturer has not announced the end of production or the withdrawal of the Shield platform. The situation is also noteworthy because the current generation Shield TV and Shield TV Pro were refreshed as recently as 2019. Despite their age, the devices continue to receive software updates. Nvidia previously stated that it intends to continue supporting the platform.
New Shield? Nvidia mentioned it earlier
A lack of devices in shops does not automatically mean a successor is imminent. As FlatpanelsHD reminds us, Nvidia did admit earlier this year that it had been experimenting with new Shield concepts. A potential new model could include, among other things, support for the AV1 codec, HDR10+ and newer Dolby Vision profiles. However, the company did not present a concrete design or a release date. The current Shield TV Pro uses the Tegra X1+ chipset, supports 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and AI-based image upscaling. The official Polish product page is still active.
For now, we will have to wait for further information from Nvidia. Availability issues are not the official end of the Shield, but after seven years since the last refresh, questions about a new generation are becoming increasingly understandable.
