Microsoft is expanding its gaming ecosystem and has just announced that Xbox Mode will be coming not only to handhelds but also to traditional computers with Windows 11, including laptops, PCs, and tablets.
Xbox Mode: the console interface on PC
Xbox Mode is essentially a full-screen interface resembling a console, designed for gaming. Instead of the classic Windows desktop, you get a simplified menu, quick access to games, and a more 'living-room' experience.
The mode can be launched in several ways:
through the Xbox app
in the Game Bar settings
with a keyboard shortcut (Win + F11)
Why Microsoft is doing this
This is not a coincidence. Microsoft is increasingly competing with Linux-based solutions, such as SteamOS, which offer a simpler and more "console-like" experience on PC.
Expanding Xbox Mode to more devices is an attempt to:
simplify gaming on Windows
better adapt to handhelds and lower-end hardware
bring PC closer to the experience known from consoles
What it means for gamers
If the feature makes it to the stable version of the system, Windows could become significantly more user-friendly for gamers using a controller or playing on TV.
This is also a signal that Microsoft wants gaming on PC to be as convenient as on console, without the need to fiddle with system settings.
Xbox Mode is a step towards connecting the world of PC and consoles, and its expansion could change the way we use Windows for gaming.
