Meta has announced new VR glasses intended, among other things, for watching films. The Meta VR Glasses use micro-OLED displays, support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and carry IMAX Enhanced certification. The hardware is due to go on sale in spring 2027.
Micro-OLED and Dolby Vision
The glasses use micro-OLED panels and an optical system employing pancake lenses. Meta reports an image density of 37 PPD. The manufacturer itself describes the display system as "5K Infinite Display". Details about the panel, however, remain unknown. The Meta VR Glasses support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and have also received IMAX Enhanced certification. One intended use is watching films, including 3D content, on a large virtual screen. Meta promises access to content from selected streaming services. In addition, we will have access to over 75 VR games at launch. The manufacturer says you will not need controllers for this; just your hands.
Just 100 grams on your head
The glasses themselves are said to weigh about 100 grams. However, that doesn't mean the whole set weighs the same. Meta moved the processor, battery and memory to an external module connected to the glasses by a cable. You can clip it to your clothing or slip it into a pocket. According to the manufacturer, the battery should last for up to 3 hours of high-resolution playback.
3D films and price
Meta announces support for 3D films and access to content from platforms such as Disney+, HBO and Paramount+. Availability varies by market. However, we have not received confirmation that the 3D technology will be paired with 4K. The company has not yet provided a detailed catalogue for Poland. Meta VR Glasses are set to go on sale in spring 2027. The price in the United States has been set at US$1,299.99 (around £1000 at a straight conversion).
