Is Sony preparing a portable PlayStation? New comments from the company's president have fuelled speculation

Calendar 6/30/2026

Reports of a possible return by Sony to the handheld console market have been circulating in the gaming industry for months. The topic has gained fresh momentum after remarks by the president of Sony Interactive Entertainment at a meeting with investors. Although the company did not announce any new device, the comments suggested that the future of PlayStation will not be limited solely to playing in front of the TV. For many observers this is another clue pointing to a new generation of hardware. For now, however, the company remains completely silent about any concrete plans.

Sony wants to take PlayStation beyond the living room

While speaking to investors, the president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Hideaki Nishino, acknowledged that the way people play games has clearly changed over the years. More and more gamers are using PC monitors, mobile devices and more flexible gaming setups instead of a traditional living-room TV. For this reason Sony wants to develop the PlayStation ecosystem so as to ensure access to games in different places and on a range of devices. Nishino also recalled the positive reception of the PlayStation Portal device, which showed that users are interested in a portable way of accessing the PlayStation ecosystem. According to the president, future solutions will leverage technologies enabling play in various forms and locations. Although there was no direct announcement of a new handheld console, many analysts took his remarks as another hint towards a project related to PlayStation 6. At the same time Sony emphasised that it does not intend to sell new hardware below production cost. This is particularly important at a time when prices for electronic components remain very high. The final decision regarding any new device will therefore also depend on the situation in the market for components.

A portable PlayStation could become an important part of the next generation

For some time now there has been speculation in the industry that Sony is working on a full‑fledged portable console capable of running PlayStation games natively, rather than only via streaming. Such hardware would not need to offer performance comparable to the PlayStation 5, because a 1080p screen requires far less processing power than 4K TVs. The development of modern AMD processors and image upscaling technology makes creating a high‑performance mobile device seem increasingly realistic. Many experts believe a launch could come around 2027, when component production becomes cheaper and the games catalogue is even richer. Such hardware would allow Sony to compete more effectively with Nintendo, the Steam Deck and the growing number of gaming laptops. An additional advantage could be PlayStation exclusives, which still arrive on PC with a long delay or remain available only on Sony consoles. In that way a new portable console could become an attractive complement to the whole PlayStation ecosystem. For now, however, all information remains purely speculative, as Sony has not officially announced any new device.

Statements by Sony's president have once again fuelled speculation about the development of a new portable PlayStation console. Although the company has not confirmed work on such hardware, more and more signs suggest that PlayStation's future may extend beyond traditional TV-based gaming.
