Google increasingly mentions the next generation of its artificial intelligence. Although Gemini 3.5 Pro has still not reached a wide user base, the company is already openly talking about work on Gemini 4. The new model is expected to be significantly larger and more advanced than its predecessors. Google representatives emphasise that the project is being developed to compete with the world’s best AI models. The development of Gemini 4 is currently one of the company’s top priorities. At the same time, the company says it will continue to refine the models in the Gemini 3.x series.
Gemini 4 is set to be Google's most ambitious project
First mentions of Gemini 4 appeared during the unveiling of the Gemini 3.6 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber models. Google then said it was simultaneously working on the next generation of its language models. According to the company, Gemini 4 will be the result of the most ambitious training process in the project's history. During Alphabet's financial results conference, CEO Sundar Pichai stressed that Google remains determined to keep its position at the forefront of artificial intelligence development. He also acknowledged that there are areas requiring further improvement, including programming and so‑called agentic coding. It is these elements that Google teams are currently concentrating a significant part of their work on. The company says it wants to compete with the best models available at the time of Gemini 4's launch.
A larger model and further updates ahead of launch
Google also revealed that Gemini 4 will be based on a significantly larger foundation model than current generations. According to Sundar Pichai, this is necessary to compete effectively at the cutting edge of AI development. The company is allocating a significant portion of its compute resources and TPU accelerators to the development of the next-generation Gemini. At the same time, Google does not intend to slow down development of its current models. It has announced further updates to the Gemini 3.x Flash family, which are expected to arrive as frequently as monthly. Future versions are expected to deliver improvements, among other things, in programming and agent capabilities. Google has not yet provided an official release date for Gemini 4, but the current release schedule points to a debut in late 2026.
Google is clearly signalling that Gemini 4 is to be one of the company's most important AI projects. Although details remain limited, announcements point to a larger model, intensive use of computational power and an ambition to compete with the best solutions on the AI market.
