Disney+ reinstates Dolby Vision and 3D films in Europe after a patent dispute.

Calendar 3/14/2026

The Disney+ platform has once again made Dolby Vision technology and 3D films available in Europe, which had previously been temporarily removed from the service. The quality limitation appeared at the beginning of February and affected users in many European countries. At that time, Disney explained the situation as just "technical problems", but it has now been confirmed that the real reason was a patent dispute.

Dispute with InterDigital

As it has been revealed, the removal of Dolby Vision was related to a legal process ongoing in Germany involving the company InterDigital. The case concerned technology used in advanced image formats. As a result of the court's decision, Disney had to temporarily restrict the availability of Dolby Vision in Germany and parts of other European markets.

The issue also affected users of Apple Vision Pro. In the Disney+ app on this device, films in 3D format disappeared as they rely on Dolby Vision technology. After resolving the issues, the formats were restored and should work again on compatible devices.

Disney confirmed that support for Dolby Vision and 3D has already been restored in Europe and the United Kingdom. To use these features again, users should update the Disney+ app to the latest version. It is worth mentioning that the absence of these technologies lasted just over a month.

Although some subscribers of the premium package did not have access to full picture quality for a time, Disney does not plan to compensate users affected by the issue.

After more than a month of restrictions, Disney+ has reinstated support for Dolby Vision and 3D films in Europe, which means the return of the highest quality of image for compatible televisions and headsets such as Apple Vision Pro.
