LG has begun the gradual rollout of webOS 26 to older televisions. The new software version debuted with this year's models, but according to the webOS Re:New programme it will also reach earlier generations. The update is currently being rolled out in waves, and one of the first older televisions to receive it is the LG G5 OLED.
webOS 26 introduces new features and improvements to older LG TVs
The webOS Re:New programme is an important part of LG’s strategy for supporting its TVs. Since 2023 the manufacturer has said it will provide successive generations of the system for several years after a device’s release. In practice this means webOS 26 will be available not only on 2026 models, but also on selected models from 2025, 2024, 2023 and 2022. This allows owners of older sets to receive some new features without having to buy a new TV. One of the main aims of the update is to improve webOS performance. LG has also prepared a refreshed Home Hub, which has been integrated with the Homey platform. There are also new AI-powered features, including AI image generation in the Gallery feature and improved search. The manufacturer has also added a Kids Mode to help parents control how their children use the TV.
However, the update does not only bring new features. In webOS 26 some features have been removed. According to available information, LG is dropping, among other things, ColourSpace and the calibration options bscpylgtv. Support for 360 VR in the web browser is also being removed. This means that users of some older TVs may gain new features after the update, but at the same time lose access to certain capabilities that were present in the previous version of the system.
The update will be released in waves. Some TVs will wait until 2027
LG is not releasing webOS 26 to all compatible TVs at once. The update is being rolled out gradually, and its availability depends on the specific model and region. Initially the new system reached, among others, the LG G5 OLED. Next in line are TVs from the popular C series, followed by selected high-end LCD TVs and OLED models from the B series. Owners of older devices from 2024, 2023 and 2022 will need to be patient, as their update may not arrive until late 2026 or early 2027.
For the LG G5 the update is marked with version number 43.21.71 and in some countries it can already be downloaded manually and installed via a USB drive. The package is around 2 GB. Most users, however, should simply wait for LG to roll out the software automatically. It is also worth remembering one important point, after installing webOS 26 you will not be able to revert to webOS 25. This year’s update process started earlier than for the previous generation of the system. webOS 25 reached older TVs only at the end of September, whereas webOS 26 is already being made available in August. Even so, owners of older models will still have to wait their turn. The best way to check for an available update is to go into the TV settings and manually check for new software versions or visit LG’s local support page.
