LG Display is said to be working on the next generation of OLED panels, which could bring a noticeable increase in screen capabilities. The company is developing a design that uses as many as five emissive layers, while the most advanced TVs currently use four. The new technology should allow increased brightness and extend panel lifespan, although it will be more expensive to produce.
Five OLED layers to provide higher brightness and longer screen lifespan
According to the Korean site The Elec, LG Display is developing a five-layer OLED panel that will be the next step in the evolution of Tandem WOLED technology. LG Display’s most advanced panels currently use four emissive layers, while the new design will include an additional blue layer. This should allow the manufacturer to increase the panel’s capabilities without sacrificing the advantages of OLED. A greater number of emissive layers could translate primarily into higher brightness and a longer screen lifespan. This is particularly important for large televisions and monitors, where users increasingly expect very high HDR brightness. At the same time, a more elaborate design will be harder and costlier to produce. LG Display is therefore also developing solutions aimed in the opposite direction. The company is said to have recently developed a two-layer OLED intended for cheaper televisions and monitors, which should reduce production costs compared with current panels.
New OLED could appear in Apple's first OLED iMac
One of the most important uses for the new technology could be Apple's future iMac. LG Display is said to have already developed a 27-inch OLED panel with 5K resolution using four layers, which is being considered as the display for a future Apple computer. The company is reportedly working on an even more advanced design because Apple expects very high image quality for its first OLED iMac. Current information suggests Apple plans to introduce an OLED iMac only around 2029. Both LG Display and Samsung Display are working on the appropriate panels and are competing to supply Apple. Samsung is also developing 5-layer Penta Tandem QD-OLED panels, so LG Display will need to offer a solution of sufficiently high quality to win the contract. The technology may, however, find uses beyond Apple computers. If production costs can be optimised, 5-layer OLEDs could in future also appear in televisions and premium monitors.
