ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, is making a stronger move into the high-budget XR segment. During the MWC fair in Barcelona, the company announced Pico Project Swan, an advanced mixed reality headset that aims to become a fully-fledged "computer on the head," rather than just gaming equipment. The new device is set to compete directly with Apple Vision Pro and Samsung Galaxy XR.
Premium class equipment
Project Swan is set to feature micro-OLED displays with a density of 40 pixels per degree (PPD), placing it in the same league as Vision Pro and Galaxy XR. This means very high image sharpness, sufficient for working with text or multiple virtual monitors. The headset will support a full-fledged mixed reality mode with passthrough cameras, allowing digital elements to be overlaid on the real world. The ambition is clear: to replace physical monitors and become a work tool.
The most intriguing element is ByteDance's proprietary dual-chip design. The company claims it offers up to 2x the performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, used among others in the Meta Quest 3. Although it may still fall short compared to Apple’s chip from Vision Pro, the performance difference compared to current VR headsets is expected to be noticeable. This suggests that Project Swan aims for more advanced applications – from office work to productivity and creative apps.
More than gaming
Until now, the Pico brand has been primarily associated with gaming. However, Project Swan is clearly set to broaden the range of applications. The operating system interface is expected to resemble visionOS and Android XR, suggesting a greater emphasis on multitasking and utility applications. The price and details regarding the software remain unknown. The launch is planned for later in the year.
While Meta is increasingly focusing on lighter AR glasses, ByteDance is raising the stakes in the high-end segment. Project Swan shows that the battle for the future of spatial computing is just getting started.
Project Swan is an ambitious attempt to create an efficient XR headset for work and entertainment. High resolution, proprietary processors, and a focus on productivity indicate that ByteDance wants to genuinely compete with Vision Pro. Now everything depends on the price and the application ecosystem.
