Apple has officially released the iOS 26.5 update along with new versions of the operating systems for iPads, Apple Watches, Macs, and Apple TV. The update weighs nearly 12 GB and mainly focuses on bug fixes and security improvements, although there are also a few new features.
iOS 26.5 Adds RCS Encryption and New Maps Features
The most significant new feature is the introduction of end-to-end encryption for RCS messages between iPhones and Android devices. This feature is set to roll out gradually among supported operators and will enhance the security of modern messaging, including high-quality photos, typing indicators, and extensive group chats. Apple has also added a new section called “Suggested Places” in the Maps app. The system will suggest places based on the user's location, popular spots in the vicinity, and previous searches. According to earlier reports, the update also lays the groundwork for advertisements in Apple Maps, which are expected to appear later this summer.
The gigantic update focuses mainly on security fixes
Although there aren't many new features, Apple emphasises the enormous number of security patches. iOS 26.5 fixes over 50 different vulnerabilities and system bugs. The company also released new Pride Luminance wallpapers with dynamic colour effects. Other Apple devices also received updates, including iPadOS, watchOS, macOS Tahoe, and visionOS. For macOS Tahoe, there are new subscription options in the App Store, as well as identical changes in Apple Maps as on iPhones.
iOS 26.5 does not bring a revolution, but introduces important security fixes and several new features related to RCS and Apple Maps. The update is very large; however, Apple is focusing heavily this time on the stability and security of the system.
