An unusual title is heading to Xbox Series X|S that places music at the very heart of the gameplay. Alpha Nomos is a rhythm action game with roguelite elements in which the tempo of the tracks affects the effectiveness of every move the player makes. The project is being developed by the small studio RibCage Games, for whom this is their first commercial title. The creators want to offer an experience in which the soundtrack is not merely a background to events but an integral part of the combat mechanics. Central to the game are the heroine Cello and the musical instruments that serve as weapons. The game's release on Xbox consoles has already been officially confirmed.
Fighting to the Beat and Instruments as Weapons
In Alpha Nomos, players take control of Cello, who awakens in a ruined world overrun by aggressive marionettes. Every attack, dodge, or combo must be executed to the rhythm of the music. Hitting at the right moment increases the heroine's effectiveness, improves the fluidity of her movements, and lets her pull off spectacular attack sequences. The developers stress that the instruments used were recorded by real musicians, so the sounds accompanying combat aren't just ordinary samples. The instruments act both as weapons and as part of the game's audio presentation. The entire gameplay is designed so that rhythm is the foundation of the mechanics, not just an add-on to the fighting. A proper sense of timing is meant to be the key to success in every encounter.
Roguelite makes every run sound different
Alpha Nomos uses a roguelite structure, so successive runs differ in their progression and in the upgrades available. During the game players acquire new musical modifications that not only change Cello’s combat capabilities but also affect the soundtrack accompanying the gameplay. This means that each successful run creates its own unique musical composition. The arenas change as progress is made, and the heroine gradually becomes stronger with each attempt. The developers draw inspiration from titles that reward mastery of mechanics and the refinement of player skill. According to the studio, the greatest satisfaction should come when rhythm, combat and enemy behaviour synchronise perfectly. Alpha Nomos will be released on Xbox Series X|S, but the exact release date has not yet been announced.
Alpha Nomos looks set to be one of the most original rhythm games in recent years. The combination of dynamic combat, roguelite elements and music created in real time during gameplay could appeal to both fans of action games and rhythm-based titles. Now it's just a matter of waiting for the release date to be revealed.
