Fed up with the tangle of cables behind your TV? Nyrius has unveiled the Phoenix Prime 4K30, an affordable kit for wireless 4K video transmission. The device costs just $99.99 and doesn't even require a connection to your home Wi-Fi network. Unfortunately, the low price comes with several significant compromises.

Nyrius Phoenix Prime 4K30 consists of a transmitter and a receiver that allow you to transmit video from a laptop, set-top box or PC directly to a TV or projector. The manufacturer offers two versions: HDMI to HDMI and USB-C to HDMI. The kit operates from 5.1 to 5.8 GHz and automatically selects one of nine transmission channels. The claimed range is up to 15 metres through obstacles and up to 45 metres in open space.

4K for $100? Not everything looks perfect

The device's biggest limitation is support for 4K resolution only at 30 Hz. There's also no support for HDR, Dolby Atmos or DTS. Transmission latency is about 90 ms, which makes the hardware a poor choice for gaming.

The Phoenix Prime 4K30 can therefore be useful for watching films, giving presentations or sending video to a projector. For demanding home cinema users, however, the compromises may be too great. It is, nevertheless, a solution that could evolve into something really worthwhile in the future.
