Xbox has announced changes to its subscription offer and at first glance, they look very favourable for gamers. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is dropping in price from 29.99 to 22.99 dollars per month, and PC Game Pass is also seeing a price cut. This is good news for those using the service, but alongside the reduction comes an important change regarding one of the most significant brands in Microsoft's portfolio.
Cheaper subscription, but changes to Call of Duty
The biggest difference concerns the Call of Duty series. New releases will no longer be available on Game Pass on launch day, as one might have assumed after the acquisition of Activision. Instead, they will appear around the holiday season, roughly a year after their debut. This is a significant shift in strategy, as Game Pass has previously been associated with "day one" releases that attracted new subscribers. Older entries in the series, however, remain available unchanged.
What Game Pass Still Offers
Despite this change, Game Pass Ultimate still provides access to hundreds of games on console and PC, online multiplayer, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and extra bonuses in games. Microsoft emphasizes that there is no one perfect model for all users, and the changes are a response to community feedback. In practice, this means attempting to find a balance between price and content, although the decision regarding Call of Duty may be a disappointment for some players.
The price drop is definitely a plus, but the absence of Call of Duty launches at the start shows that Game Pass is starting to change. It is still one of the most cost-effective subscriptions for gamers, but its biggest strengths are slowly evolving.
