Walmart has officially unveiled the new Onn 4K Pro media player, which is intended to be a cheaper alternative to the Google TV Streamer. The device runs on the Google TV system and offers support for 4K, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, and an Ethernet port, all while costing significantly less than Google's hardware. It seems that Walmart wants to make a bigger push into the streaming market and compete with devices like Apple TV, Fire TV, and Nvidia Shield.
Onn 4K Pro offers Google TV and premium features at a lower price
The new Onn 4K Pro is priced at $60 and visually resembles a Google device. The hardware runs on Google TV, meaning access to the same streaming apps, integration with Google services, and AI features based on Gemini. Walmart has also added some premium elements, such as a backlit remote, Wi-Fi 6, and support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. In terms of specifications, however, the device falls a bit short compared to the Google TV Streamer. The Onn 4K Pro uses an Amlogic S905X5M processor and has 3 GB of RAM, while the Google device offers 4 GB of RAM. Both devices, however, have 32 GB of internal storage. Despite this, the Onn may prove appealing to those looking for a more budget-friendly device with modern picture and sound features.
Walmart expands its own line of streamers and intensifies its entry into the Google TV ecosystem
In addition to the Pro model, the company also showcased a cheaper Onn 4K stick. The device supports 4K resolution as well as HDR10 and HDR10+, although conflicting information has emerged regarding Dolby Atmos support. The device is expected to cost around 40 dollars and be one of the cheapest options with Google TV on the market. The new Onn devices are partially set to fill the gap left by the discontinued Chromecasts while also competing with the most popular streamers on the market. Walmart is heavily focusing on integration with its own ecosystem and collecting data on viewed content and user purchases. This may be a downside for some, but the low price and broad format support could mean that the new devices quickly find their audience.
Walmart is increasingly confidently entering the streaming device market. The Onn 4K Pro looks like a cheaper version of the Google TV Streamer and may appeal to users looking for modern 4K equipment without spending a lot of money.
