The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remaster debuts today, 29 September. The new version of the cult classic CD Projekt RED game is available as a free update for players who own the title on a supported platform. The remaster has launched on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2.
The Witcher 3 has received plenty of changes
The biggest changes are to the visuals. On PC, path tracing has been added, along with support for NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 4 and Intel XeSS 2.0. Textures and models have also been updated based on The Witcher 3 HD Reworked. Lighting and the look of vegetation have been improved. However, CD Projekt RED didn't stop at graphics. The skill system has been overhauled, combat and Geralt's movement have been improved, and new options have been added to photo mode. The remaster will also get support for cross-platform mods.
New PC requirements
Alongside the Remaster, the game's hardware requirements have changed. CD Projekt RED emphasises that the new version needs a more powerful PC than the original The Witcher 3, especially if you want to use path tracing. Fans who want to play it in 4K at 60 fps will need to be well equipped. The devs recommend an RTX 5080 for that kind of setup. The developer also recommends installing the latest graphics drivers before launching the game. On PC there are technologies that can help achieve smoother performance. DLSS 4.5 has gained support for Ray Reconstruction, FSR 4 offers frame generation and Anti-Lag 2, and XeSS 2.0 also supports frame generation and a low latency mode.
PS5 Pro has also received upgrades
Owners of PS5 Pro can make use of PSSR technology, VRR and an uncapped frame rate. Performance mode lets you reach up to 90 frames per second on displays that support VRR.
Importantly, the update does not require buying the game again. If you previously bought The Witcher 3, you'll receive the Remaster at no extra cost on the same platform.
