According to the latest leaks, Apple still wants to develop its idea of physical camera control. In the upcoming iPhone Fold, a Camera Control button is expected to appear, even though the device is meant to be exceptionally thin. This is quite surprising, as pressing such a component into a foldable phone requires significant space optimisation. However, Apple seems to have decided that it is worth it.
The idea sounds good in theory
The premise is simple. Foldable phones are large, so often you need to use two hands. Camera Control aims to get around this and allow you to take photos one-handed, controlling the zoom and settings without touching the screen. It sounds sensible, especially for those taking photos on the move.
The problem is that even in current models like the iPhone 16 Pro, this button doesn't always work perfectly. Zoom control can be rather imprecise and it's easy to overdo it in one direction or the other. On an even larger and thinner device, this may simply be uncomfortable. Holding the phone with one hand while simultaneously operating the button might turn out to be less natural than usual touch control.
What Actually Works
From user experiences, it appears that Camera Control works best as a quick shortcut for launching the camera and taking photos. In these two applications, it makes sense and is convenient. However, more advanced control still performs better on the screen.
Apple consistently develops its ideas, but in the case of the foldable, ergonomics will be key. Camera Control may be useful, but it could just as well turn out to be an addition that most people use only occasionally.
