Nintendo has done something that no one has achieved before. The Switch 2 hit the market on June 5 and in just four days sold over 3.5 million units. Globally. This is official data from Nintendo, not leaks or speculation.
For comparison – Sony needed 16 days to distribute 2.1 million units of the PlayStation 4. PlayStation 5? Seven weeks and only 4.4 million. Source? Daniel Ahmad from Niko Partners, the guy who doesn't throw numbers around lightly.
Strongest opening in console history
This means one thing: ChooseTV 2 is the fastest-selling console in history. Even if the hype dies down (and it probably will a bit), Nintendo can start popping the champagne already. But of course, the question arises – what’s next?
ChooseTV 2 starts from a completely different place than its predecessor, the Wii U, which was effectively dead a few months after its launch in 2012. This time it’s different. ChooseTV 1 sold over 152 million units – and that was at a time when the market was tougher than ever.
Does the high price of Nintendo not bother him?
However, there are some catches. The new console is more expensive, and so are the games. Some players are turning up their noses. Additionally, the list of titles available at launch isn’t impressive. There are a few new releases, a few remasters, but no major hits to kick things off.
And this is where the power comes in. The Switch 2 is already powerful enough to handle games from PS5 and Xbox Series X. Moreover, the first ports are already appearing. For many, that’s enough of a reason to invest in the hardware. Even if they will have to wait a while for “Zelda” or the new “Mario.”
Wii U was a flop. Now it's a whole different league!
Nintendo has stumbled before – Wii U was a dud. But they learned everything they needed from that lesson. Today, they have a product that not only looks good on the charts but also truly changes how and where we play. Because we can't forget that it's a versatile console. Switch 2 is still a hybrid console – you can play on the go, you can connect it to the TV via HDMI, you can take it on trips, or hand it to the kids for a moment of peace. It's not just a console. For many, it's even a lifestyle.
Will Switch 2 keep up the pace? No one knows. But one thing's for sure – it launched like a rocket.
