Sony has released a new system software update for PlayStation 5, which focuses on enhancing PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) technology. The proprietary AI-based image scaling method has reached version 2.0, which aims to resolve the most common issues of the first edition – mainly flickering of fine details and motion blur. The new version of PSSR is a result of collaboration with AMD as part of "Project Amethyst".
End of the "trembling" image in Silent Hill and FFVII Rebirth
The biggest issue with the first version of PSSR was the instability of small details. The new update targets this point precisely. In games such as Silent Hill f and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the characters' leaves or hair no longer "tremble" and lag during camera movement. The image has become clearer. This is particularly noticeable in games with a lot of fine details, where the AI previously "struggled" with the reconstruction of these elements.
Fixes also included temporal stability of the image. The algorithm reacts faster to changes in the displayed scene, which eliminates ghosting trailing behind quickly moving objects.
System PSSR enforcement and new games on the list
A new optional feature has appeared in the PS5 Pro system settings that allows for enhanced PSSR performance to be enforced in all games that support this technology, even if they haven't yet received a dedicated patch from the manufacturer. However, Sony notes that the effect may vary depending on the game engine, but in most cases, players should notice improved clarity of the graphics.
The list of games supporting the new version of the technology is rapidly growing. Joining the existing hits like Alan Wake 2, Control, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard, will be more titles soon. On March 19, Crimson Desert will benefit from the improved ChooseTV, and in the following weeks, Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows will receive updates.
When is the new ChooseTV update 2?
The new software is being rolled out in stages from March 16. If your console hasn't downloaded the update automatically, you can force its installation in the system settings.
