Sony has introduced another revision of the PlayStation 5 Slim, but did so with little fanfare. The changes were discovered during a teardown of the limited-edition console featuring a Marvel's Wolverine theme. Inside was a new EDM-051 motherboard, a modified cooling system and a more easily accessible CMOS battery.
New motherboard and revised cooling
The most important change is the new EDM-051 motherboard. Sony reorganised some components and simplified the console's internal layout. They also changed the heatsink design and the method used to secure the liquid metal around the APU. The solution is intended to be structurally closer to the one used in the PS5 Pro. However, this does not mean the new PS5 Slim definitely runs cooler or quieter. So far, no comparative measurements of temperature, noise or performance have been published, so we're primarily talking about a structural change.
The battery will be easier to replace
EDM-051 also brings a practical change from a servicing perspective. The CMOS CR2032 battery is now much more readily accessible, so replacing it doesn't require as deep a disassembly of the console as before. The HDMI retimer, the chip responsible for proper signal transmission to a TV or monitor, has also been updated. In the new revision a different, cheaper solution has been used while the electronics design has been simplified.
So far, not every PS5 Slim
The main caveat is that Sony has not officially announced this revision. The new EDM-051 board was found in a specific limited-run PS5 Slim Digital Edition featuring Marvel’s Wolverine. There’s no confirmation yet that all new units available in Europe use the same design.
