Buying the Nvidia Shield TV is becoming increasingly difficult. The Shield TV Pro is listed by the manufacturer as unavailable, and the basic model has disappeared from Nvidia's US website. The company insists, however, that this does not mean the end of the whole line.
Nvidia Shield sold out. Company cites strong demand
According to FlatpanelsHD, availability issues affect many markets. Nvidia explains the situation by saying that the devices are sold out due to demand. The manufacturer has not announced the end of production or the withdrawal of the Shield platform. The situation is also notable because the current generation of Shield TV and Shield TV Pro was last refreshed in 2019. Despite its age, the hardware still receives software updates. Nvidia previously stated that it intends to continue supporting the platform.
New Shield? Nvidia had mentioned it earlier
The absence of devices in stores doesn't automatically mean a successor is on the way. As FlatpanelsHD notes, Nvidia did admit earlier this year that it had been experimenting with new Shield concepts. The potential new model could include, among other things, support for the AV1 codec, HDR10+ and newer Dolby Vision profiles. However, the company hasn't revealed a specific design or launch date. The current Shield TV Pro uses the Tegra X1+ SoC, supports 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and AI-based image upscaling. The official Polish product page remains active.
So for now we have to wait for further information from Nvidia. Availability issues are not an official end for the Shield, but after seven years since the last refresh, questions about a new generation are increasingly natural.
