Meta has announced new VR glasses designed, among other things, for watching films. The Meta VR Glasses use micro-OLED displays, support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and carry IMAX Enhanced certification. The device is due to go on sale in spring 2027.
Micro-OLED and Dolby Vision
The glasses use micro-OLED panels and an optical system that employs pancake lenses. Meta reports an image density of 37 PPD. The manufacturer describes the display system as a '5K Infinite Display'. However, details about the panel remain unknown. Meta VR Glasses support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and have also received IMAX Enhanced certification. One intended use is watching films, including 3D content, on a large virtual screen. Meta says there will be access to content from selected streaming services. In addition, we'll have access to over 75 VR games at launch. The manufacturer says we won't need controllers for that; just our hands.
Only 100 grams on your head
The glasses alone weigh about 100 grams. That doesn't mean the whole kit weighs the same. Meta moved the processor, battery and memory into an external module connected to the glasses by a cable. You can clip it to your clothing or tuck it into your pocket. According to the manufacturer the battery should last for up to 3 hours of high-resolution content playback.
3D films and price
Meta announces support for 3D films and access to content from platforms such as Disney+, HBO and Paramount+. Their availability depends on the market. However, we have not received confirmation that the 3D technology will be combined with 4K. The company has not yet provided a detailed catalogue for Poland. Meta VR Glasses are due to go on sale in spring 2027. The price in the United States has been set at $1,299.99 (approx. AUD 1850 with a simple conversion).
