The new extraction shooter Marathon from studio Bungie is now available on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles. Players land on the planet Tau Ceti IV as cybernetic mercenaries known as Runners. In the game, you can go solo, collaborate with other players, or form temporary alliances to acquire valuable gear and safely extract from the map. However, the extraction mechanics mean that if you die before evacuation, you lose all the gear you've acquired.
Here are 10 tips to help you survive your first missions in Marathon.
1. Noise reveals your position
In Marathon, practically every action generates sound—opening doors, gathering loot, healing, or reloading weapons. Other players can hear your presence and prepare an ambush.
2. Listen carefully to your surroundings
Sound works both ways. You can often hear an enemy before they come into sight. Good headphones can provide a huge advantage.
3. Always take supplies
During missions, it’s hard to find ammunition and healing items. It’s better to prepare in advance—even the best weapon is useless without ammo.
4. Always plan your evacuation
The main goal is to reach the extraction point. Check the map and make sure you know where the nearest exit is.
5. Don’t fight every opponent
Sometimes the best decision is to avoid combat. In Marathon, it’s more important to survive and extract loot from the map than to eliminate opponents.
6. Try the Rook mode
If you're short on gear, you can play as a Rook—a lone scavenger entering an ongoing match. This character has a camouflage ability, making it easier to avoid enemies.
7. Complete contracts
Quests from factions help develop your character and unlock stat bonuses. At the beginning, however, it’s wise to play cautiously and learn the maps.
8. Experiment with your gear
Runners can use various implants, weapons, and modifications. It’s worth testing different configurations to find a playstyle that best suits your preferences.
9. Alliances are uncertain
Sometimes it’s worth cooperating with other players, but remember they can decide to betray you at any moment.
10. Gear is just a tool
In Marathon, loot often changes. There's no point in getting attached to one set; the most important thing is gaining experience and upgrading your character.
Marathon is a dynamic extraction shooter where tactics, planning, and collaboration with other players are key. Every expedition to the planet Tau Ceti IV can yield massive rewards, but it can also result in the loss of all your gear. With these tips, new players can better navigate their early missions and increase their chances of a successful evacuation.
