LG has begun rolling out webOS 26 to older TVs. The new software version debuted with this year’s models, but under the webOS Re:New programme it is also set to reach earlier generations. The update is currently being rolled out in waves, and one of the first older TVs to receive it is the LG G5 OLED.
webOS 26 brings new features and improvements to older LG TVs
The webOS Re:New programme is an important part of LG’s support strategy for its TVs. Since 2023 the manufacturer has said it will provide subsequent generations of the OS for several years after a device’s launch. In practice this means webOS 26 will be available not only on 2026 TVs but also on selected models from 2025, 2024, 2023 and 2022. That lets owners of older sets get some new features without having to buy a new TV. One of the main goals of the update is to improve webOS responsiveness. LG has also prepared a refreshed Home Hub, which has been integrated with the Homey platform. On top of that there are new AI-powered features, including AI image generation in the Gallery feature and improved search. The manufacturer has also added a Kids mode to help parents manage how young children use the TV.
However, the update does not only add new capabilities. For webOS 26 some features have been removed. According to available information, LG is dropping ColourSpace and the calibration option bscpylgtv. Support for 360 VR in the web browser is also gone. That means users of some older TVs may gain new features after the update but at the same time lose access to certain functions that were present in the previous OS version.
The update will be rolled out in waves. Some TVs will wait until 2027
LG is not making webOS 26 available to all compatible TVs at once. The update is being rolled out gradually, and its availability depends on the specific model and region. First in line to get the new system was the LG G5 OLED. Next are expected to be TVs from the popular C series, followed by selected high‑end LCDs and B‑series OLED models. Owners of older devices from 2024, 2023 and 2022 will need to be patient, as their update may not arrive until late 2026 or early 2027.
For the LG G5 the update is labelled 43.21.71 and in some countries it can already be downloaded manually and installed using a USB drive. The package is about 2 GB. Most users, however, should simply wait for LG to make the software available automatically. It’s also worth remembering one important point: after installing webOS 26 you won’t be able to roll back to webOS 25. This year’s update process started earlier than for the previous generation. webOS 25 reached older TVs only at the end of September, while webOS 26 is already being released in August. Even so, owners of older models will have to wait their turn. The best way to check for the update is to go into your TV’s settings and manually check for new software versions, or visit LG’s local support page.
