Well, it’s happened. Sony has confirmed what the internet has been whispering for months – a brand new adventure is on the way in Aloy's world. Horizon: Steel Frontiers is a fully-fledged MMORPG set in the same universe, but this time we won’t see it on PS5. Yes, you read that right – the first PlayStation Studios game that skips Sony consoles.
NCSoft and Guerrilla Join Forces
The project is led by NCSoft in collaboration with Guerrilla Games, and the first showcase took place at G-Star 2025. And while it sounds like an experiment, it seems both companies know what they're doing. Horizon: Steel Frontiers is set to be a massive MMO world with thousands of players, tribal rivalries, and of course what fans love most – hunting gigantic machines.
Deadlands – new hunting territory
The game's action takes us to the region of Deadlands – a desert land inspired by Arizona and New Mexico. Each player takes on the role of a machine hunter, hunting not only for glory but also for resources. The developers promise massive raids, territory battles, and even the opportunity to snag weapons straight from the defeated beasts and repurpose them for personal use. Sounds ambitious – and very MMO.
Essence of Horizon in MMO Version
Producer Sung-Gu Lee explains that the key lies in the emotions that come from battling colossal machines:
“Hunting powerful machines has been the heart of the Horizon series. Now, we want to expand that experience to the MMORPG world.”
Personalisation and a “horizonal” vibe guaranteed
There will also be an extensive character creator and personalisation – after all, our avatars are set to become the new legends of Deadlands. Jan-Bart van Beek from Guerrilla announces that while Steel Frontiers will be “different”, it’s still going to be “very horizonal”. So, presumably, a combination of adventure, mysticism, and technological destruction.
Want to play? Of course, you do. Although this is the first Horizon without PlayStation, it looks like Sony is opening a new front – and it’s a steel one.
