Google increasingly mentions the next generation of its artificial intelligence. Although Gemini 3.5 Pro still hasn’t been rolled out to a wide audience, the company is already openly talking about work on Gemini 4. The new model is expected to be significantly larger and more advanced than its predecessors. Google representatives emphasise that the project is being developed to compete with the world’s best AI models. Development of Gemini 4 is currently one of the company’s top priorities. At the same time, the company says it will continue to improve the Gemini 3.x series models.
Gemini 4 is set to be Google's most ambitious project
The first mentions of Gemini 4 appeared during the presentation of the Gemini 3.6 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber models. Google said at the time that it was simultaneously working on the next generation of its language models. According to the company, Gemini 4 will be the result of the most ambitious training process in the project's history. At a conference on Alphabet's financial results, CEO Sundar Pichai emphasised that Google remains determined to stay at the forefront of artificial intelligence development. He also acknowledged there are areas that need further improvement, including programming and so‑called agentic coding. Google’s teams are now focusing a significant portion of their work on those areas. The company says it wants to compete with the best models available at the time of Gemini 4's launch.
Larger model and further updates even before launch
Google also revealed that Gemini 4 will be built on a significantly larger base model than current generations. According to Sundara Pichaia, this is necessary to effectively compete at the highest level of AI development. The company is devoting a large share of its compute resources and TPU hardware specifically to developing the next-generation Gemini. At the same time, Google does not intend to slow development of its current models. Further updates to the Gemini 3.x Flash family have been announced, and these are expected to appear even at monthly intervals. Subsequent releases are expected to bring improvements, among other things, in programming and agent capabilities. Google has not yet given an official release date for Gemini 4, but the existing release schedule suggests a debut in late 2026.
Google is clearly signalling that Gemini 4 is set to be one of the company's most important AI projects. Although details remain scarce, the announcements point to a larger model, heavy use of compute and an ambition to rival the best AI solutions on the market.
