Dell is launching a new gaming monitor and doing something that many have been waiting for: QD-OLED at a much lower price. The Alienware AW2726DM model starts at around $350, which just a year ago was unthinkable for this technology.
QD-OLED getting closer to the mass market
The new model shows that QD-OLED technology is slowly becoming less of a luxury. Until now, such monitors cost significantly more, but Dell is clearly trying to attract a broader group of users.
In return, we get:
27 inches
1440p resolution
240 Hz refresh rate
instant OLED response time
This is still a very strong gaming specification.
There are compromises but it's still worth it
A lower price means certain limitations. The biggest is a brightness of around 200 nits in standard mode and up to 400 nits in HDR. This can be noticeable in bright rooms. It's also not a 4K monitor, but for many gamers, 1440p + 240 Hz is the ideal balance between quality and performance.
Despite the compromises, QD-OLED still offers:
perfect black
very high contrast
vibrant colours
It's something that classic LCD monitors (IPS or VA) still cannot fully match.
This is another step towards the popularisation of OLED in monitors. If prices continue to drop, we may see a moment when OLED becomes the standard, rather than a premium addition. Dell shows that OLED in monitors is starting to enter the mainstream, although for now with some compromises.
