On Friday, June 27, Netflix releases the third – and as the creators say – final season of “Squid Game”. Without unnecessary previews: Gi-hun is back, the Front Man is back, the red jumpsuits are back, and the game is once again about to spiral out of control.
This time, the heroes already know what they are dealing with. The only question is: will it be enough to change anything?
Fictionally: Without Mercy
There will be no time jumps. The third season starts exactly where the second left off. Gi-hun gives up on traveling and decides to return – not to play, but to dismantle the entire structure from the inside. Sounds familiar? Yes, but this time he is not alone. And it's not just about people.
In the background, Jun-ho – the police officer, Front Man’s brother, who survived, is also back, and now he has his own scores to settle. One can assume that the whole thing is more of a thriller with elements of a game, rather than the other way around.
The games themselves? Still brutal. Still symbolic. Still targeting the lowest instincts – loyalty, betrayal, desperation. The creator of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, promises that it will be the most psychologically intense of all seasons.
Who’s back, who’s new?
The cast is a mix of well-known faces and a few new characters who – if everything goes as it did in previous seasons – will quickly become recognizable and even faster eliminated.
Lee Jung-jae returns as Gi-hun (Player 456)
Lee Byung-hun as Front Man
Wi Ha-joon as Jun-ho
Yim Si-wan, Park Sung-hoon, Kang Ha-neul, and several others as new participants
Some characters will finally receive more background – we will learn, among other things, how Front Man came to his position and what mechanisms really govern the “organization”.
Will this be a worthy conclusion, or just another round of the same game?
The director confirmed that this is the last season, but at the same time left a door open: if Netflix wants a spin-off, they are ready. But Gi-hun is to receive a full conclusion. No cliffhangers.
If someone has watched the earlier seasons – and not just for the blood – then yes. The third season promises to be the most self-aware, both in terms of characters and the game concept itself. The question is whether it will manage to wrap everything up with class or will head towards an average thriller with good scenery.
