Sony has released a new system software update for PlayStation 5, which focuses on improving PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) technology. The proprietary AI-based image scaling method has received version 2.0, which aims to address the most common issues of the first edition – mainly flickering of fine details and ghosting in motion. The new version of PSSR is the result of collaboration with AMD as part of "Project Amethyst."
End of the "shaking" image in Silent Hill and FFVII Rebirth
The biggest issue with the first version of PSSR was the instability of small details. The new update directly addresses this point. In games like Silent Hill f and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the leaves or hair of characters stopped "shaking" and trailing during camera movement. The image has become clearer. This is especially noticeable in games with a lot of small details, where AI previously "fumbled" when reconstructing these elements.
The fixes also included temporal stability of the image. The algorithm reacts faster to changes in the displayed scene, eliminating ghosting behind rapidly moving objects.
System Force PSSR and New Games on the List
A new optional feature has appeared in the PS5 Pro system settings that allows for improved PSSR performance to be forced in all games that support this technology, even if they have not yet received a dedicated patch from the manufacturer. However, Sony notes that the effect may vary depending on the game engine, but in most cases, players should notice improved clarity of the graphics.
The list of games supporting the new version of technology is rapidly growing. Joining the current hits like Alan Wake 2, Control, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard will soon be more titles. On March 19, Crimson Desert will benefit from the upgraded ChooseTV, and in the coming weeks, Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows will receive updates.
When is the new ChooseTV update 2?
The new software is being rolled out in stages since March 16. If your console has not automatically downloaded the update, you can force its installation in the system settings.
