LG expands Gaming Portal to more webOS devices – is cloud gaming the future?

Calendar 2/21/2025

LG announced that Gaming Portal, their cloud gaming platform, will be available on additional devices. Previously available on TVs with webOS 23, it is now set to appear on LG Smart Monitors and StanbyME screens. The expansion of the service is planned for the second quarter of 2025.

The Gaming Portal provides access to popular cloud gaming services such as NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna, Boosteroid, and Blacknut. In the future, Xbox Cloud Gaming will also join the list. In theory, this means you can play without a console or PC – all you need is a TV and a stable internet connection. LG is also announcing a more transparent interface that will allow for quicker browsing of games, applications, and recently launched titles. Additionally, a "My Page" section will be introduced, where you can track progress and create lists of your favorite games.

From a technical standpoint, LG televisions support gaming in 4K at 120 Hz with VRR, and the latest OLEDs (2025) evo even offer 4K at 165 Hz. The company also boasts a ClearMR 10000 certification from VESA, which is supposed to guarantee better image smoothness. It sounds good, but does Gaming Portal actually attract gamers? Game streaming still has its limitations – from connection quality to input lag, which can be noticeable in dynamic productions. Ultimately, it all depends on whether cloud gaming will actually work in daily use or remain a curiosity for the few.
