Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is getting cheaper, but there is one important catch.

Calendar 4/22/2026

Xbox has announced changes to its subscription offering, and at first glance, they look very beneficial for gamers. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is decreasing from $29.99 to $22.99 per month, and PC Game Pass is also seeing a price drop. This is good news for users of the service, but along with the reduction comes a significant change concerning one of the most important brands in Microsoft's portfolio.

Cheaper subscription, but changes in Call of Duty

The biggest difference concerns the Call of Duty series. New instalments will no longer be available on Game Pass on release day, as one might have expected after the acquisition of Activision. Instead, they will appear around the holiday season, roughly a year after their debut. This is quite a shift in strategy, as Game Pass has been associated with "day one" releases that attracted new subscribers. However, older entries in the series remain available unchanged.

What Game Pass still offers

Despite this change, Game Pass Ultimate still provides access to hundreds of games on console and PC, online multiplayer, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and additional bonuses in games. Microsoft emphasises that there isn’t one ideal model for all users and the changes are a response to community feedback. In practice, this means trying to find a balance between price and content, although the decision regarding Call of Duty may be disappointing for some players.

The price reduction is definitely a plus, but the absence of Call of Duty launches at the start shows that Game Pass is beginning to change. It is still one of the most cost-effective subscriptions for gamers, but its greatest strengths are slowly evolving.
