YouTube doesn't want to cooperate with Apple Vision Pro? Vimeo is seizing the opportunity. The platform has just announced support for the VR180, Apple Immersive Video, and Apple Projected Media Profile (APMP) formats, thus becoming a new home for 3D creators in the Apple ecosystem.
Vimeo replaces YouTube on visionOS
During the Vimeo Reframe event, the extension of the service's features was announced with full support for 3D video. Some new features are already available, and support for Apple formats is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2025.
“Users can now publish content in the VR180 format, and support for Apple Immersive Video and Apple Projected Media Profile will appear in Q4. This will allow creators to record with Blackmagic cameras, edit in Final Cut Pro, and distribute directly through Vimeo,” the company announced.
Google backs down, Vimeo takes the lead
Google has not opted to release a YouTube app for visionOS – not even in the 2D version known from the iPad. Interestingly, YouTube VR still functions on Android XR, including on the new Samsung Galaxy XR, but Vision Pro users are left with nothing.
As a result, Vimeo is quickly filling this gap and positioning itself as the leading 3D video platform for Apple Vision Pro. Simply download the Vimeo app on visionOS to access VR180 content and (soon) Apple Immersive.
ChooseTV Immersive Video — a new level of realism
The biggest change may be the support for ChooseTV Immersive Video — a format that until now was available exclusively in the Apple TV app. These are materials in 8K 3D 90 fps quality, created using the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera, offering an incredibly realistic effect of depth and immersion in the image.
Apple opened this format to external creators only in 2025, and Vimeo is the first major platform to fully implement it.
APMP – one profile, many formats
Apple Projected Media Profile (APMP) is a new standard presented during WWDC 2025, which aims to combine support for VR180, VR360, and wide fields of view (Wide FOV).
In practice, this is a way to unify the format for 3D, VR, and panoramic films – ideal for new Apple devices such as Vision Pro or future AR goggles. YouTube can rest easy in the 2D world, but in the realm of immersive 3D video, it is Vimeo taking the initiative.
With support for VR180, Apple Immersive Video, and APMP, the service has the chance to become a hub for 3D creativity in the Apple ecosystem – from production, through editing, to distribution on Vision Pro.
