OLED technology and the popular QLED quantum dots may gain a serious rival in the future. South Korean companies SK Materials JNC and SN Display are entering a partnership aimed at preparing mass production of perovskites. These materials could enable an even wider colour palette in televisions and monitors.
Perovskites set to leave the laboratories
SK Materials JNC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with startup SN Display to develop a system for the mass production of perovskite nanocrystals. The companies want to move the technology from the research stage to the production of materials that can be used in commercial displays. SN Display, a startup founded by Professor Tae‑Woo Lee of Seoul National University, will provide the nanocrystal synthesis technology. SK Materials JNC will contribute its experience in manufacturing materials for OLED displays, quality control and the organisation of industrial processes.
What can perovskites change in TVs?
The biggest advantage of perovskites is high colour purity and luminous efficiency. These materials can emit light in a very narrow wavelength range, which allows for more saturated colours. This makes them suitable, among other things, for colour conversion layers and future self-emissive displays.
SN Display has already been honoured with a CES Innovation Award 2026 for a perovskite-based colour conversion film. According to the company, the solution achieves over 95% coverage of the BT.2020 colour space, the standard that defines a very wide colour gamut for Ultra HD images.
However, this does not mean that TVs using the new material will appear in shops anytime soon. The signed agreement concerns only preparing for large-scale production, and the companies have not provided a timeline for commercialisation. Ensuring adequate material durability and operational stability also remains a challenge. For now, then, this is another step in the development of the technology rather than an announcement of specific TV models.
