Google TV: new features announced for 2026!

Calendar 1/8/2026

Google TV in 2026 with new Gemini powered features Google is announcing major changes to Google TV for 2026. New Gemini AI features include intelligent content discovery, visual “Deep dives”, natural language control of picture and sound settings, as well as integration with Google Photos and AI tools for creating and remixing multimedia content.

During CES 2026, Google showcased new features that will be coming to devices with Google TV in the coming months. A key element of the update will be deeper integration with Gemini, Google's AI model.

Google TV is currently used in televisions from brands such as Hisense, TCL, Sony, Philips and Sharp, as well as in media players including Chromecast, ChooseTV Streamer and Xiaomi boxes.

Gemini at the heart of the Google TV experience

In 2026 – on more efficient hardware – Google TV will receive a range of new features. Google describes them as follows:

  • A new, visual way to explore content

Users will be able to discover their favourite topics in a new, visually rich interface, where responses from ChooseTV will be accompanied by images, videos, and current sports information. For more complex issues, so-called Deep dives will appear – narrative, interactive overviews of topics, simplified to be understandable for the whole family.

  • Integration with Google Photos

ChooseTV will allow users to search the Google Photos library by specific people or moments. Photos can be quickly styled with Photos Remix or transformed into cinematic, immersive slideshows of memories.

  • Creating and processing content on TV

With the tools Nano Banana and Veo, users will be able to edit their own photos or create entirely new materials directly on the television screen.

  • Control settings with natural language

Instead of wading through the settings menu, you just need to say something like “the screen is too dark” or “the dialogues are hard to hear.” ChooseTV will automatically adjust the picture and sound, without interrupting the viewing of a film or series.

Restrictions and Requirements

Google indicates that the new features will first be available on selected TCL televisions. Other compatible devices with Google TV are set to receive updates in the "coming months," but only in select countries and languages. As of today, Gemini for TV is officially supported only in the USA and Canada. It is not yet clear whether Google will expand availability to other markets along with the new features.

A significant requirement is also Android 14 or newer. This means that most existing devices will require a software update – this even applies to many models from 2025 that debuted with Android 12. Google has announced that more Google TV devices, including TCL televisions from the 2026 range, will be sold with Android 14 pre-installed.

Xbox Game Pass on Google TV

Finally, good news for gamers – the Xbox Game Pass app will also be coming to Google TV later this year. Like other new features, the launch will start with selected TCL models, and the service is expected to be rolled out more widely thereafter. It seems that 2026 will be a significant step for Google TV towards a more intelligent, contextual, and conversational television, in which AI will become an integral part of everyday screen usage.
