The loudest departure in the history of Rockstar Games. When Dan Houser left Rockstar in 2020, the industry was in shock. The co-creator of GTA and Red Dead departed abruptly, without a clear explanation. Now new information is emerging suggesting that the decision was not at all as "peaceful" as the studio implied.
Tez2 speaks up again
Houser has been increasingly commenting on old projects in recent months – from the cancelled “Agent” to the unlaunched “Bully 2”. This time, however, it is not him causing the stir, but Tez2. He is one of the most trustworthy figures in the GTA community, known for his accurate leaks regarding the inner workings of Rockstar. It was he who revealed new details while responding to a discussion about the reasons for Houser's departure on GTAForums.
The conflict between the Houser brothers was supposed to be pivotal
According to Tez2, citing two former Rockstar employees: “He left due to a disagreement with his brother regarding the direction of the company. If it had been about trade unions or working conditions, he would have left back in 2018, as a form of apology for the comment quoted by Schreier.” So it’s not a single scandal, not crunch, not pressure — but a deep difference in vision of what Rockstar should be in the future.
What if?
The studio has never provided details about the co-founder's departure, but these reports are igniting the imagination once again.
What would the GTA series look like today if the two brothers were still steering the company in the same direction?
We will probably never find out, but one thing is certain – the topic of Dan Houser's departure has just returned to the spotlight.
