OpenAI is introducing a change that will significantly improve the comfort of using ChatGPT. The latest update means that ChatGPT Voice is no longer a separate mode, and voice conversations can now be conducted directly in the regular chat window.
What it means for users
Until now, voice calls required switching to a separate screen with an animated blue orb. There, you could speak to ChatGPT, listen to the responses, and use several additional options, like live video recording or quick muting. The problem was that:
– on this screen, you couldn't see the text transcription of the responses,
– if something was missed, you had to exit voice mode,
– switching between voice and text was not very smooth.
After the update, everything happens in one window. You can speak and simultaneously see the responses appearing on the screen, as well as browse the previous course of the conversation and view shared visualizations – from maps to photos.
More natural conversation
In practice, this means a more intuitive use of ChatGPT. Voice and text cease to be separate worlds – now you can smoothly transition between them within a single conversation. When you want to end the voice conversation and return to typing, just tap "end".
If someone prefers the previous, "separate" voice mode, they can still return to it. Simply go to Settings → Voice Mode and enable the Separate mode option.
The new interface is already being rolled out to all users, both in mobile apps and in the web version. The change will appear automatically.
