Apple announces a major change in Apple Podcasts. This spring, the app will receive support for video podcasts using HLS technology, a streaming solution developed by the company for years. Users will be able to easily switch between listening and viewing modes, activate full-screen mode horizontally, and download content for offline playback. The update is expected to work seamlessly on both Wi-Fi and cellular networks. This new feature will be available for iPhones, iPads, and Apple Vision Pro. This is one of the biggest steps in the platform's development in years.
HLS in Apple Podcasts. What does it change for users?
The new video format based on HTTP Live Streaming will allow for dynamic adjustment of image quality according to network conditions. Video episodes will be fully integrated with the existing features of the application, including recommendations and thematic sections. However, the most important thing is that the user will not have to choose between audio and video. A podcast can be started as video material and then switched to audio without interrupting playback. Materials can also be saved for offline viewing.
New Opportunities for Creators and Advertisers
The introduction of HLS also means business changes. Creators will have the ability to dynamically insert video ads, including those read by hosts. Apple announces that it will not charge for the mere publication of podcasts, whether it concerns RSS/MP3 or HLS video. In the future, the company will start charging advertising networks for views of dynamic video ads in the app. The new standard will be supported from launch by Acast, ART19, Omny Studio, and SiriusXM, among others.
The feature is already available in beta for iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4. The official rollout for all users is planned for spring. Video podcasts will also appear in the web version of Apple Podcasts.
Apple is introducing video podcasts in a way that is intended to be a natural extension of the existing experience, rather than a revolution forcing a change in habits. HLS gives creators greater control over monetisation, while users enjoy a more convenient way to access content. This is a signal that podcasts are entering a new phase by combining audio and video in one cohesive ecosystem.
