"We don't want just better graphics." The head of CD Projekt reassures fans: The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2 will not be simple sequels!

CD Projekt confirms: The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2 will not be simple sequels - the studio is inspired by Baldur’s Gate 3, but is committed to its own style and new innovations.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has swept away the competition and become one of the most influential games of recent years. It's no surprise that the production from Larian Studios has caught the attention of CD Projekt Red as well. But if anyone was counting on Witcher 4 suddenly turning into an isometric RPG with turn-based combat and a thousand options for interaction, then… not this time.

Baldur’s Gate 3 inspires, but CDPR is going its own way

The site PC Gamer recently spoke with the president of CD Projekt, Michał Nowakowski. One of the questions concerned the direction in which the game department is heading and whether the phenomenon of BG3 has influenced the studio's plans. Nowakowski candidly admitted — yes, Baldur’s Gate 3 is an inspiration, but it does not change the DNA of their productions:

“Baldur’s Gate 3 was very inspiring, but I think we will still stick to what was in The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk. However, we don’t just want to make another similar game with better graphics. We want to introduce innovations.”

It’s important to emphasise: CDPR does not intend to copy BG3, nor change the genre of its games, but is closely examining how Larian approached interaction with the world and the reactivity of the environment.

Is Witcher 4 going to be like BG3? “Definitely not”

Nowakowski distinctly distanced himself from expectations that the fourth Witcher could follow the path of Larian.

“We definitely do not intend to make a game like the one Larian created. That’s the kind of game they can make. But the way of interacting with the world and how it reacts was certainly an inspiration for us.”

In other words - there won't be turn-based gameplay, there won't be isometric view, but there may be more depth in the world and in how it responds to the player's actions.

Spin-off in the style of Divinity? Not really

Although it could theoretically be interesting, Nowakowski firmly ruled out such a direction. CDPR has a different philosophy today:

“At one point, we made the decision that our internal team must focus on key games, not on spin-offs.”

In short: now only big projects — like The Witcher 4 or the next Cyberpunk.

Witcher 4 is one of the most anticipated games in the industry

There’s no doubt about it now: the hype is enormous. This is best illustrated by the nominations and voting results, with Witcher 4 appearing in lists of the most awaited productions of the year, including at The Game Awards and Golden Joystick Awards 2025. Competition? As always, deadly. But the expectations for CDPR are equally high and it seems that the studio doesn't want to take the easy route. There won’t be Witcher 3.5 or Cyberpunk 1.5 with new graphics. There will be innovations.

And what kind? CDPR hasn’t revealed that yet — but it promises to be an exciting phase for the studio’s fans.
