The Disney+ platform has once again made Dolby Vision technology and 3D films available in Europe, which were previously temporarily removed from the service. The quality limitation occurred in early February and affected users in many European countries. At that time, Disney explained the situation only as "technical issues," but it has now been confirmed that the true cause was a patent dispute.
Dispute with InterDigital
As revealed, the removal of Dolby Vision was related to a court case being held in Germany by InterDigital. The case concerned technology used in advanced image formats. As a result of the court's decision, Disney had to temporarily limit the availability of Dolby Vision in Germany and parts of other European markets.
The issue also affected users of Apple Vision Pro. In the Disney+ app on this device, movies in 3D format disappeared, as they utilise the Dolby Vision technology. Once the issues were resolved, the formats were restored and should again work on compatible devices.
Disney confirmed that support for Dolby Vision and 3D has now been restored in Europe and the UK. To use these features again, users should update the Disney+ app to the latest version. It is worth noting that the absence of these technologies lasted just over a month.
Although some premium package subscribers did not have access to full image quality for a time, Disney does not plan to offer compensation to users affected by the issue.
After more than a month of restrictions, Disney+ has restored support for Dolby Vision and 3D movies in Europe, which means the return of the highest quality picture for compatible TVs and headsets like the Apple Vision Pro.
