Five years after the debut of the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, Microsoft announced another price increase in the US. This is quite an unusual phenomenon – in previous generations, consoles typically became cheaper over time, but now their prices have risen for the second time this year (the previous change occurred in May 2025).
Despite the aging hardware, players will pay more – also for games, which have seen their base price rise from $70 to $80 since 2025. Microsoft explains the decision in an official statement:
“We understand that these changes are difficult and have been made after careful consideration. Looking to the future, we are focused on providing more ways to play more games on any screen and delivering value to Xbox players.”

For comparison...
Xbox Series X at launch in November 2020 cost $500.
In May 2025, the price increased to $600 and is now $650.
PlayStation 5 also became more expensive, but it's worth noting that the newer and more powerful PS5 Pro is priced at $750 – just slightly more expensive than the Xbox Series X (1TB).
It seems that the current generation of consoles will be remembered in history as the first where prices are systematically rising rather than falling.
