The first tests of the disassembly of the MacBook Neo have brought a considerable surprise to the service industry. The new budget Apple laptop breaks away from the longstanding tradition of 'sealed' designs – instead of the ubiquitous glue, the manufacturer has opted for standard screws and modularity.
No more glue – Apple opts for standard screws
For years, laptops with the bitten apple logo were synonymous with designs that were almost impossible to open independently without the use of heat guns and the risk of damaging the casing. As noted by the CNET website, citing material from the Australian channel Tech Re-Nu, the situation has changed dramatically in the MacBook Neo. Inside the device, no glue strips or strong adhesives were found that previously held the key components together.
Instead, Apple has opted to use standard Torx screws (T3, T5, and T8), moving away from the rare and problematic pentalobe screws. This design is closely related to the target market of the device – the MacBook Neo has been designed with the educational sector in mind. Easy access to the interior allows school IT departments to quickly replace damaged components, which is a crucial issue when it comes to equipment used by students.
Modular Keyboard and Motherboard Limitations
One of the most important innovations in the construction of the MacBook Neo is the ability to individually replace the keyboard itself. Official service instructions confirm that technicians no longer need to order the entire top case to repair a single non-functioning key. This significantly reduces the costs of potential out-of-warranty repairs.
Despite these positive changes, the MacBook Neo still has certain limitations typical of modern Apple computers as well as Chromebooks and notebooks. The device's motherboard is extremely compact (based on the A18 Pro processor architecture), which results in the RAM and SSD being permanently soldered on. This means that while the MacBook Neo is much easier to repair in the event of mechanical failures, users still do not have the option to upgrade its specifications independently after purchase.
