Fans of 3D films have finally seen the premiere of one of the most eagerly awaited productions of recent months. Avatar: Fire & Ash is now available in 3D both digitally and on physical Blu-ray discs. The highest picture quality is available to Apple Vision Pro users, where the film can be watched in 4K HDR with Dolby Vision. Not all viewers will be able to take advantage of these capabilities, however, because some features remain unavailable in Europe. The release also demonstrates that Disney continues to strongly support the development of 3D cinema.
The best version of Avatar has landed on Apple Vision Pro and Blu-ray 3D
The film Avatar: Fire & Ash hit home release at the end of March, but the long-awaited 3D version has only just arrived. As is customary, Disney made it available on the film’s premiere day on Disney+. The most advanced edition went to Apple Vision Pro users, who can watch the film in 3D, 4K HDR resolution and Dolby Vision on a virtual screen that resembles a huge cinema. For many picture enthusiasts, this is currently the highest quality available for home viewing. The film can be bought separately or watched as part of a Disney+ subscription. However, not all users will be able to take full advantage of this version. In European Union countries, the 3D and Dolby Vision features on Disney+ are currently unavailable due to an ongoing patent dispute. The alternative is the Blu-ray 3D release, which has just gone on sale. In that case the picture is only available in 1080p resolution and standard dynamic range (SDR). The disc edition, however, offers lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1, while the digital version uses Dolby Atmos. For collectors of physical releases, it's still a very attractive option.
It remains unclear whether the film retained one of cinema’s most important technologies
Among fans there was also a question about support for 48 frames per second, that is the High Frame Rate (HFR) technology. It was in that format that Avatar: Fire & Ash was screened in select cinemas, delivering exceptionally smooth motion during the most dynamic scenes. So far, however, it has not been confirmed whether the version available on Apple Vision Pro also uses the 48 fps mode. Interestingly, the two previous films in the series are marked on Disney+ as supporting 4K Ultra HD 48, whereas the latest instalment does not currently show that label. An official statement on the matter is awaited. If HFR support is confirmed, Apple Vision Pro users will effectively receive the most advanced home version of the film available on the market. Avatar has long been one of the series most responsible for advancing image and sound technology, so each new instalment sets further standards for the home cinema. The release of a 3D version also shows that, despite the much lower popularity of that technology, producers still invest in high-quality releases for the most demanding viewers. Everything points to Apple Vision Pro remaining one of the few platforms currently offering such advanced cinematic experiences at home.
Avatar: Fire & Ash is now available in 3D. Apple Vision Pro offers the highest quality with 4K HDR and Dolby Vision, while collectors can pick up the 3D Blu-ray release. It's still unclear whether the home release supports the theatrical 48 frames per second mode.
